The Importance of Working With a Physical Therapist For Relief of Sciatic Pain



I firmly believe that taking an active an assertive role in your recovery from sciatic pain is the only way to relieve the pain and stop it from coming back. A key component of recovery is working with your physical therapist to treat your sciatica. It is critical that you find a therapist that listens, understands and responds to your concerns and questions. Remember it is your body! You are in charge! During my introduction, the therapist explained that I would be doing a series of gentle exercises to stretch and strengthen the muscles which will help alleviate the sciatic pain. He said the goal was to develop my core muscles which in turn will support the muscles surrounding my spine. This will relieve the pressure on my sciatic nerve. Here is a critical point if at anytime during your session with the therapist, if you feel any pain let him or her know! The third point: Do not leave it up to the therapist to cure you! Do your exercises at home, be consistent and persistent. Set goals for yourself and with the help of your therapist you will become stronger and pain free.
