Herniated Disc - Invasive Procedures to Repair and Recover a Herniated Disc

In a previous article I discussed my own experiences with non-invasive procedures to repair and recover from a herniated disc. Now I will explore the two major invasive methods, surgery and spinal injections. I have also undergone both of these procedures with varying results. The difference between invasive and non-invasive is really the difference between low risk and high risk. Non-invasive means any procedure that does not involve surgery and or cutting and invading the body. So let us look are two invasive methods.

1. Spinal Injections: Being injected by a needle the size of a horse needle was not a fun thing! It did get some relief for a couple of weeks, but then the pain returned. The results of spinal injections vary. One friend had an injection which lasted for two or three days another friend has a shot every six months or so and has endured this routine for several years. There are risks involved in any invasive procedure. Infection and worst including paralysis are just two of the situations that may result from a shot in the spine. Whatever the possible benefits, they are temporary and really do nothing to repair and recover your bulging disc.

2. Surgery: Now we are really getting into invasive, risky procedures. While I certainly appreciate the skill and care I received under my surgeon skilled hands, surgery especially spinal surgery is fraught with dangers. First many surgery fail. In fact it is only surgery that has the official condition known as “Failed Back Surgery Syndrome”. Although I had surgery in May 2009 and the surgeon told me everything was mechanically fine. I still experience some pain down my leg which my doctor assures me will eventual improve. It’s not unusual that some people will go through 2 and 3 surgeries without completely repairing your disc.

These two procedures are the main ones most doctors follow. They will take a conservative approach first, but if these fails the next step is a spinal injection or surgery. To their credit these procedures do help a number of people. However I believe there are other methods that have been proven to work and involve few if any risks are low cost and can be done at home.
